Phra Isuan (Thai: พระอิศวร) is Shiva, the destroyer and regenerator among the three supreme deities of Hinduism. Shiva governs the destruction and renewal of all things and is the lord of yogis and ascetics; the opening of the third eye on his brow can consume all creation, symbolising his supreme power to sweep away old obstacles and open the way to new life.

Supreme in Thai Brahmin Worship

In the Brahmin tradition of the Thai court, Phra Isuan is honoured as the highest deity. The Devasathan Brahmin temple in Bangkok and the famous Giant Swing (Sao Ching Cha) are bound to his worship — the traditional Giant Swing ceremony (Triyampawai) was an ancient rite held to welcome Shiva's descent to earth to bless the land, testifying to the deep roots of Shiva worship in Thai royal culture.

Divinity and Domain

Phra Isuan governs destruction and regeneration, able to sweep away accumulated misfortune, dissolve calamity and clear the old to make way for the new, and to guard those who attain in their practice. Those seeking to break through impasses, dispel calamity and renew their fortunes often venerate him, and his power is regarded as the most potent and vast.

Iconography

Phra Isuan is usually depicted in ascetic form with a third eye on the brow, holding a trident (Trishul), a crescent moon upon his head and a serpent about his neck, his body smeared with sacred ash; he is often shown riding the bull Nandi. Common offerings include flowers, pure water and fruit, presented in prayer for the dispelling of calamity and for attainment.

Wearing and Collecting

Phra Isuan amulets and images are a category of Thai sacred objects of supreme spiritual power, signifying the breaking of obstacles, the dispelling of calamity, renewal and attainment in practice, and suit those seeking a breakthrough and the dissolving of misfortune, worn on the person and honoured with reverence and proper offerings.
