Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan

วัดพระปฐมเจดีย์ราชวรมหาวิหาร

Nakhon Pathom陀罗钵地时期大宗派

About Wat Phra Pathom Chedi

Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan (วัดพระปฐมเจดีย์ราชวรมหาวิหาร) stands in the center of Nakhon Pathom town and is one of Thailand's most important royal temples, famed for the towering Phra Pathom Chedi — one of the tallest stupas in the world at about 120.45 meters. It is a symbolic heartland of Thai Buddhist faith.

One of the World's Tallest Stupas

"Phra Pathom Chedi" means "the first holy stupa." Tradition traces its origins to the era when the Indian Emperor Ashoka sent monks to spread Buddhism to Suvarnabhumi (the region of present-day Thailand), making it a witness to the earliest arrival of Buddhism in the land. The present stupa was rebuilt in Sri Lankan style by King Mongkut (Rama IV), enclosing the ancient original within — majestic and gleaming with gold.

A Royal Temple and Its Blessings

As one of Thailand's highest-ranking royal temples, Wat Phra Pathom Chedi hosts major Buddhist ceremonies throughout the year. Sacred objects and amulets consecrated by its monastic community carry the profound merit of this national treasure, symbolizing protection, blessings, and peace.
