Phra Pidta is the "shield" of Thai amulets — a Buddha figure covering his face in deep meditation, blocking all negativity. The number of hands indicates the breadth of protection: 2-hand Pidta focuses purely on danger-blocking, 4-hand adds wealth protection, 8-hand covers all areas of life, and 12/16-hand versions represent the highest level of comprehensive blessing. For beginners, a 2-hand or 4-hand Pidta is ideal.
What is Phra Pidta?
Phra Pidta (Thai: พระปิดตา, also spelled Phra Pid Ta) means "closed eyes" or "covered face." It depicts the Buddha covering his face with his hands while seated in meditation. This posture represents the deepest form of meditative absorption — shutting out all sensory input to achieve complete inner stillness.
In spiritual terms, this closure creates a powerful barrier. Just as the Buddha blocks out the external world during meditation, the Pidta amulet blocks negative energy, danger, and misfortune from reaching the wearer. It is a purely defensive amulet — the spiritual equivalent of a shield.
Phra Pidta is one of the five most popular Thai amulet types and has been produced by temples across Thailand for centuries. Famous Pidta masters include Luang Phor Toh of Wat Pradoochimplee and Luang Phor Poon of Wat Pai Lom.
Hand variations explained
2-hand Pidta
Core power: Pure protection — blocking danger and negativity
The most classic and common form. Two hands cover the face, closing the eyes — the primary sensory gate. This is the foundation of all Pidta power: shutting out what can harm you.
- Focus: Deflecting danger, accidents, violence, and ill intentions from others
- Best for: Anyone seeking straightforward protection. The ideal first Pidta.
- Price range: ฿400-500 depending on the monk and age
4-hand Pidta
Core power: Protection + wealth preservation
Two hands cover the face while two additional hands cover the body's sides. The extra hands are believed to "seal" the channels through which wealth can leak away.
- Focus: Blocking danger AND preventing financial loss. The Thai saying goes: "Four hands seal the fortune roads — wealth comes in but does not flow out."
- Best for: Business owners, traders, anyone who earns well but struggles to save
- Price range: ฿1,000-3,000
6-hand Pidta
Core power: Protection + wealth + social harmony
Six hands cover the face and wrap around the body, corresponding to the six sense gates in Buddhist philosophy (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind).
- Focus: Complete sensory shielding plus improved relationships
- Best for: People in socially complex environments — politics, office dynamics, public-facing roles
- Price range: ฿1,700-5,000
8-hand Pidta
Core power: All-around blessing — protection, wealth, relationships, career, health
Eight hands cover the body from all eight cardinal directions (N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW), creating a 360-degree spiritual shield. This is considered a turning point in Pidta power: from here, the amulet is not just defensive but actively attracts positive energy.
- Focus: Complete life coverage. Many experienced collectors consider 8-hand the best balance of power and value.
- Best for: Anyone seeking comprehensive spiritual support
- Price range: ฿2,700-10,000
12-hand Pidta
Core power: Extreme protection + authority + powerful attraction
Twelve hands create layers of coverage that represent 24-hour, all-direction protection. The craftsmanship required to render 12 distinct hands on a small amulet is itself a testament to the maker's skill.
- Focus: Maximum defense with added authority and influence
- Best for: Senior collectors, executives, high-stakes professionals
- Price range: ฿6,600-30,000
16-hand Pidta
Core power: The apex of Pidta power — complete spiritual mastery
The rarest and most complex form. Sixteen hands overlap in intricate layers, completely sealing the Buddha figure. These are almost always made by the most accomplished masters and in very limited quantities.
- Focus: The full spectrum of spiritual protection and blessing at maximum intensity
- Best for: Serious collectors and those seeking the most powerful Pidta available
- Price range: ฿16,500-100,000+
