What is the Luang Pu Liew B.E. 2539 Opening the Worlds wealth turtle (Rian Tao Ruean Luang Pu Liew Run Pang Poed Lok)?
Luang Pu Liew Pannako (หลวงปู่หลิว ปณฺณโก) of Wat Rai Taeng Thong (วัดไร่แตงทอง), Nakhon Pathom, is famous for the Phaya Tao Ruean (พญาเต่าเรือน) turtle tradition; in Thailand his name is almost synonymous with the wealth turtle. "เต่าเรือน" is a turtle-shaped amulet, and the turtle stands for long life, steadiness and wealth held securely.
This batch was issued in B.E. 2539. The turtle's shell carries the "ปางเปิดโลก" (Pang Poed Lok) Buddha: the Buddha returning from the Tavatimsa heaven and opening the heavens, the human world and the hells so that all beings could see one another. The supplier calls it the "path-opening Buddha" for its sense of a way opening ahead. This is the large mold (พิมพ์ใหญ่), in copper.

Who was Luang Pu Liew?
Luang Pu Liew was born in B.E. 2448 (1905) into a poor farming family in Ratchaburi and ordained at 27. He learned the turtle tradition from Luang Phor Yorn of Ratchaburi, practised austerities in Burma and studied under several other masters before settling at Wat Rai Taeng Thong in Nakhon Pathom. He lived simply, built or led several temples, and passed away in B.E. 2543 (2000) at 95. From his first turtle in B.E. 2516 he issued dozens of turtle batches, making the wealth turtle one of Thailand's best-known amulet forms. It is said that after each blessing he placed the turtles in a tank of water, and only those that floated up were considered complete.

FAQ
Q: How do I know the batch and mold?
A: The Thai Buddha Image Admiration Association formal card reads "เหรียญเต่าเรือนหลวงปู่หลิว รุ่นปางเปิดโลก พิมพ์ใหญ่ เนื้อทองแดง พ.ศ. 2539": Luang Pu Liew turtle amulet, Pang Poed Lok batch, large mold, copper, B.E. 2539, from "วัดไร่แตงทอง" in "นครปฐม" (Nakhon Pathom), No. CO01412, with a QR code for verification.
Q: Are the "Opening the Worlds" Buddha and the "path-opening" Buddha the same?
A: Yes. The Thai "ปางเปิดโลก" literally means the posture of opening the world; the supplier calls it the path-opening Buddha for its meaning of a way opening ahead.
Q: Luang Pu Liew made many turtle batches. What sets this one apart?
A: This batch places a standing Opening the Worlds Buddha on the shell, for the meaning of a way opening ahead. It came in large and small molds, and this is the large mold as stated on the certificate. It dates from B.E. 2539, during his lifetime.
Q: Can I wear a copper amulet every day?
A: Yes. It is uncased, so a case is recommended to avoid scratches. Do not scrub it with cleaners; the patina is part of its proof of age.
Q: Who is it suited to?
A: Business owners, anyone changing direction or opening up a new path, frequent travellers, and collectors of Luang Pu Liew turtles.
