Annual Wai Kru Festival

Every March, Wat Bang Phra hosts the spectacular Wai Kru (ไหว้ครู) ceremony — one of Thailand's largest Buddhist gatherings. Tens of thousands of devotees from Thailand and across the globe converge to pay homage to their spiritual masters. During the ritual, some devotees enter a deep meditative trance, channeling animal spirits such as tigers and monkeys in extraordinary physical displays. The Wai Kru festival has become one of Thailand's most internationally recognized religious and cultural events, attracting tourists, journalists, and photographers worldwide.

Architecture and Sacred Artifacts

The spacious temple grounds feature towering ancient trees and traditional Thai architecture. The main Ubosot enshrines sacred images of the temple's revered abbots. The Luang Pho Pern Memorial Hall houses his personal ceremonial tools, original amulet molds, and rare Sak Yant manuscripts. A lifelike golden wax statue of Luang Pho Pern serves as a focal point for devotees' prayers.

Getting There

  • By car/private hire: Take Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) westward toward Nakhon Pathom, about 1 hour from Bangkok. Free parking at the temple.
  • By Grab: A Grab ride from central Bangkok costs approximately 500-800 THB.
  • By public transport: Take BTS to Bang Wa station, transfer to a minibus (Song Taew) to Nakhon Chai Si, then hire a motorbike taxi to the temple.

Sak Yant Guide

  • Tattoos are offered on a voluntary donation basis — there is no fixed price
  • Choose your design, then join the queue; typical wait is 1-3 hours
  • Traditional bamboo needle (Mai Sak) hand-poke method — not machine tattooing
  • Female visitors are separated by a cloth barrier, as monks cannot directly touch women
  • Recipients are expected to observe certain precepts after receiving a tattoo
