About Wat Bang Phra

Wat Bang Phra (วัดบางพระ) is located in Nakhon Chai Si District, Nakhon Pathom Province, approximately 50 kilometers west of central Bangkok, Thailand. As the nation's most celebrated Sak Yant temple, it is a premier destination for those seeking authentic Thai sacred tattoos and exploring Thai Buddhist culture. Founded during the Ayutthaya Kingdom era over four centuries ago, the temple gained international renown through its legendary abbot, Luang Pho Pern (หลวงพ่อเปิ่น).

Birthplace of Sak Yant Sacred Tattoos

Wat Bang Phra is universally recognized as the spiritual heartland of Sak Yant (สักยันต์) — Thailand's ancient tradition of sacred geometric tattoos. The temple's tattoo lineage spans centuries, featuring iconic designs such as Hah Taew (Five Sacred Lines), Gao Yord (Nine Spires), and Suea Ronghai (Tiger). Each design incorporates specific Buddhist scriptures and spiritual blessings for protection, authority, and prosperity. The temple gained global fame when Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie received her Sak Yant tattoos here, putting Wat Bang Phra on the world map.

Annual Wai Kru Festival

Every March, Wat Bang Phra hosts the spectacular Wai Kru (ไหว้ครู) ceremony — one of Thailand's largest Buddhist gatherings. Tens of thousands of devotees from Thailand and across the globe converge to pay homage to their spiritual masters. During the ritual, some devotees enter a deep meditative trance, channeling animal spirits such as tigers and monkeys in extraordinary physical displays. The Wai Kru festival has become one of Thailand's most internationally recognized religious and cultural events, attracting tourists, journalists, and photographers worldwide.

Architecture and Sacred Artifacts

The spacious temple grounds feature towering ancient trees and traditional Thai architecture. The main Ubosot enshrines sacred images of the temple's revered abbots. The Luang Pho Pern Memorial Hall houses his personal ceremonial tools, original amulet molds, and rare Sak Yant manuscripts. A lifelike golden wax statue of Luang Pho Pern serves as a focal point for devotees' prayers.

Amulets and Sacred Objects

Wat Bang Phra is renowned for its tiger amulets and self-image medallions, each personally consecrated by the temple's senior monks. Vintage amulets from Luang Pho Pern's era — particularly the tiger-riding self-image and tiger-head Pidta — command premium prices among serious Thai amulet collectors. The temple's amulet distribution center is open daily, offering a wide selection of contemporary Sak Yant amulets and protective charms blessed by current monks.
