Life of Luang Pho Pern
Luang Pho Pern (หลวงพ่อเปิ่น), ecclesiastical name Phra Khru Thep Rangsi, was born in BE 2465 (1922 CE) in Nakhon Chai Si District, Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand, and passed away in BE 2545 (2002 CE) at the age of 80. He was one of modern Thailand's most influential Sak Yant masters and Buddhist monks, spending his entire monastic life at Wat Bang Phra, which he transformed into the world's most famous sacred tattoo temple.
Ordination and Training
Luang Pho Pern entered Wat Bang Phra as a young novice and was fully ordained at age 20. He studied under numerous distinguished monks, mastering meditation, sacred scriptures, and spiritual arts — with particular expertise in Sak Yant incantations and Tiger Magic. He was renowned throughout the Thai Buddhist clergy for his strict discipline and profound spiritual attainment.
Sak Yant Lineage
Luang Pho Pern elevated Wat Bang Phra's tattoo tradition to unprecedented heights, personally performing sacred tattoos for tens of thousands of devotees. His signature designs include the Hah Taew (Five Sacred Lines), Gao Yord (Nine Spires), and Suea Ronghai (Tiger) — each imbued with powerful blessings for protection, wealth attraction, and commanding authority. Under his guidance, the temple's annual Wai Kru ceremony grew into one of Thailand's largest and most spectacular Buddhist gatherings.
Amulets and Sacred Objects
Amulets personally consecrated by Luang Pho Pern command premium value in the Thai amulet market. His masterpieces include the tiger-riding self-image (Tiger King amulet), tiger-head Phra Pidta, Phra Krut (Garuda), and various metal and powder-based amulets. His creations center on the tiger motif, symbolizing fearless power and regal authority, earning a distinguished place among Thailand's top five tiger amulet lineages. Amulets produced between BE 2510-2540 are the most sought-after among serious collectors.
International Legacy
Luang Pho Pern and Wat Bang Phra's Sak Yant tradition have gained worldwide recognition. After Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie received her sacred tattoos at the temple, Wat Bang Phra became a global pilgrimage site for tourists and Buddhist culture enthusiasts alike. Following his passing, the temple continues his Sak Yant legacy, performing sacred tattoos daily for devotees from around the world.
