Life of Somdej Toh

Somdej Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phrommarangsi (สมเด็จโต พรหมรังสี) was born in 1788 (reign of Rama I) and passed away in 1872 at the age of 84, after 64 years in the monkhood. One of the most revered monks in Thai Buddhist history, he served as abbot of Wat Rakhang for 20 years and is honored as the "Father of Thai Amulets."

Creator of the Somdej Amulet

At Wat Rakhang, Somdej Toh created Thailand's most celebrated "Somdej Wat Rakhang" amulet (Phra Somdej) — pressed from sacred powder, square and upright in form — revered as the foremost of the "Benjapakee" (five sacred amulets) and a supreme symbol of Thai amulet devotion, signifying wealth, protection, wisdom, and merit.

A Venerated Grand Master

Beyond his mastery of the Dhamma and scriptural blessing, Somdej Toh was known for his strict discipline and compassion, earning deep respect from the Thai royal family and the public. Objects of the Somdej lineage remain the most esteemed classics in Thai amulet devotion.

Buddhist Era to AD: Dating Your Thai Amulet

Every Thai amulet is dated in the Buddhist Era — BE 2515 means AD 1972. The rule is simple (subtract 543), but reading Thai numerals, knowing the pre-1941 calendar quirk, and using dates to catch fakes takes a little more. This working guide gives you the conversion rule, a Thai numeral key, a decade map of famous amulet eras, and the dating red flags that expose counterfeits.
